You will have the opportunity to give input about curriculum, tour the college facility and give advice about how funds are spent. Building a relationship with the college instructors will also make the process of hiring their students easier. How to hire student TechsConnect with the almost 1,500 students at local community colleges studying to become Automotive Technicians at one of the Dealership Career Fairs hosted by OCADA on local college campuses. The career fairs are exclusive to OCADA members, so Service Directors, Shop Foremen and HR representatives can meet students and set up interviews for a later date. Last year, more than 40 student techs were hired by dealerships as a result of these events. Look for more events this fall. Allow for Schedule FlexibilityCommunity colleges offer an excellent education for a fraction of the price students would pay at a for-profit technical university. Funding for community colleges comes from the state of California, based on the number of students who complete courses. To continue receiving funding, so our local college Automotive programs can offer a range of courses, it is important that students are encouraged to complete the courses they are taking. Consider allowing a student new hire to work more weekend hours or evening or morning shifts to work around their current classes.Design a Growth Pathway for Student Technicians in your DealershipSome incentives that college instructors have seen successfully develop new technicians at dealerships are:• Offer a career path that provides hands-on mentor led practice at the dealership that mirrors and supports what the student is learning in class. Reinforcement of ASE-area specific tasks will improve ASE pass rates.• Avoid MPI only time on the job. This will avoid student burn out and offering mentor led time practicing what they are doing in class/lab adds to the students overall learning experience.• Offer a starting pay rate that supports student tool purchases through the Snap-On and Matco 40-50% discount student program (or offer incentives when students pass ASEs like a tool gift card bonus).• Offer working students a raise when an ASE is passed or they have purchased tools related to the work they are doing, like buying brake measurement tools while they are taking their brake course.• Offer an incentive package equal to tuition costs in the form of a tool gift card they can use before exiting the program if the student achieves Master ASE status (all 8 Tests passed) and they demonstrate mastering skills from work with their mentor.• Identify mentor technicians on your staff and have them partner with college students working at your dealership. There are a variety of ways to do this. One that has worked very well is the MDT/Team Leader gets a small raise to take on the student tech. The student is paid hourly out of the MDT’s pay but the MDT receives all the student tech’s Flat Rate hours at the MDT’s pay rate. This is like adding efficiency to an already efficient high earning tech so everyone gains in this example.Capitalize On The Next Generation Of Skilled EmployeesMike Klyde, Cypress College and Kim McPhaul, OCADA Member Services ManagerByCYPRESS COLLEGE - 500 studentsSpecialty?
